Vancouver scores very well on Mercer Quality of Living Report
Vancouver has again received a high ranking on an international quality of life report. Vancouver was tied for third on the Mercer’s Quality of Living Report, which uses expatriate assignments to rank 215 cities worldwide on the tangible aspects of living in a city.
The report was created by Mercer Human Resource Consulting, which provides advice to multinational companies on international assignments. It provides a global ranking of the world’s most liveable cities based on 39 criteria ranging from personal safety to public transportation. Although quality of life issues are often in the eye of the beholder, factors such as schooling, quality housing, health care, recreational amenities, and environment top the list.
Zurich (Switzerland) topped the list at 108.1 points, followed by Geneva (Switzerland) at 108 points and Vancouver and Vienna (Austria) tied for third at 107.7 points. The remainder of the top 10 included Auckland (New Zealand), Dusseldorf, Frankfurt and Munich (all in Germany), Bern (Switzerland) and Sydney (Australia). The annual report showed little significant movement with European, Australian and Canadian cities dominating the upper echelons of the rankings.
Other Canadian cities to crack the top 50 included Toronto (15th), Ottawa (tied for 18th), Montreal (22nd) and Calgary (24th). The top U.S. cities were Honolulu (tied for 27th), San Francisco (29th) and Boston (36th). Baghdad received the worst ranking (215th).
The rankings were based on data collected between September and November 2006, with data regularly updated to account for changing circumstances.
